Design@Large Seminar Series
Hosted by the Design Lab, UC San Diego
Wednesday, December 3, 4-5:15 pm
Now in CSE 1202 (Computer Science, first floor, room 1202 -- just across the Engineering Courtyard from the Design Lab in Atkinson Hall) moved due to high interest

ABSTRACT:
The School of Engineering and the department of Visual Arts are engaged in an ambitious project to create a Maker's Space in the SME building. Eventually, all Engineering freshmen will be exposed to a course in which they actually build and operate interesting stuff. The Visual Arts will have available state-of-the art facilities for experimentation and play, for the creation of media of all forms.

The Design Lab hopes to help, perhaps helping teach joint courses with engineering, arts, and design faculty.

Who knows? In this exciting panel, the deans of Arts and Humanities and Engineering will join the chair of Visual Arts to discuss their plans.

(Caveat: This abstract was written by Don Norman of the Design Lab and does not necessary reflect what any of the participants believe, will do, or will say. Worse, he won't even be there: he will be in Hong Kong.)

BIOS:
Jordan Crandall is a media artist, theorist, and performer. He is a Professor and Chair of the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego and a founding director of the Active Structures and Materials research studio at UCSD, sponsored by Department of Visual Arts and the Center for the Humanities.

Al Pisano: In his role as Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering, Pisano is responsible for strategic planning and programmatic development. He is an active researcher who serves on the faculty of the departments of mechanical and aerospace engineering and electrical and computer engineering. Before coming to UCSD in 2013, he served as acting dean of UC Berkeley's engineering school.
