They are lingered upon as and in acts of analysis and narration, observation and literary concern, within gatherings that may complicate conventions of genre and form. They transcend subject/object, interior/exterior distinctions.
Analytical & performative. He is a real, analytical object of tracking (a person, a suspect), yet also a figure (a symbol/device/conduit in the form of the flaneur, badaud, cruiser, shopper).
Objective & immersive. Dwelled upon & dwelled with. Situated in 1st & 3rd person -- a narrator/commentator who is both in the action (casual stroller) & out of it (purposeful surveiller, equated with the observational expert & all tracking technology). Toggles between the casual eye of the stroller & the purposeful scan of the surveiller.
Congealed & Distributed. He is situated as an actor whose gender/agential/ontological status is contingent (an agent and a street both agents of one another). This agency is concentrated, yet dispersed in ontological configurations.
Exterior
The man on the street is seen by a narrator/commentator who stands outside the action as omniscient and/or surveilling (in the capacity of the observational expert or the technological apparatus). This mode of seeing is purposeful.
The narrator/commentator understands the man on the street as a real, analytical object of tracking (a person, a suspect) and as a figure (a symbol/device/conduit in the form of the flaneur, badaud, cruiser, shopper).
At times this narrator/commentator is embodied in the first person: I am seeing the man on the street; I am omniscient narrator or surveiller; I am the observational expert or the apparatus. I am the commentator who narrates or surveys the scene.
At times this narrator/commentator is described in the third person (he/she/it), from a higher-level omniscient or surveilling position -- a meta surveiller.
Gender & ontological statuses are contingent. All are actors positioned on par with one another. He/She/It has a concentrated agency, yet also dispersed in new ontological configurations. I am an actor whose gender & ontological status is contingent, on par with all urban actors (the street, etc.). I have a concentrated agency, yet also dispersed in new ontological configurations (no longer "mine").
Interior
The narrator/commentator shifts into the first person, becoming the man on the street. This mode of seeing is casual, allowing the audience to linger with me.
I am in the action as a narrator/commentator, casually strolling. I am a real, analytical object of tracking (a person, a suspect) and I am also a figure (a symbol/device/conduit in the form of the flaneur, badaud, cruiser, shopper).
Gender & ontological statuses are contingent. I am an actor whose gender & ontological status is contingent, on par with all urban actors (the street, etc.). I have a concentrated agency, yet also dispersed in new ontological configurations (no longer "mine").
